SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY

Welcome to the Surgical Technology Department

at Horry-Georgetown Technical College

Department Chair: Dolores Aurand

Surgical Technology is an exciting profession where the work environment is both intense and dynamic. The Surgical Technologist is an integral part of the surgical team. They must have a thorough knowledge of surgical instruments since their responsibility is to assemble the needed instruments and supplies for various types of surgical procedures. To facilitate the smooth progress of surgery, the surgical technologist anticipates the needs of surgeons by passing instruments in an efficient manner. Passing instruments is a precise skill requiring both manual dexterity and concentration abilities.

A vital role of the surgical technologist in the scrub role is to maintain aseptic techniques and sterile conditions prior to and during surgery to minimize risk of surgical site infection to the patient. The surgical technologist may also assume some patient care responsibilities.

Specific questions concerning admission requirements, scheduling of courses or graduation requirements can be answered by the department chair.
